Curriculum vitae

Tobias completed his medical degree at the University of Zurich, followed by clinical training at the University Hospital Zurich and Psychiatric University Hospital Zurich, where he currently serves as an Attending Physician ad interim on an inpatient ward.

He completed his dissertation at the University of Zurich, focusing on emotional regulation in traumatized refugees. During his postdoctoral research at the University Hospital Zurich, he expanded this work by using network analysis to study the associations and interactions among symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Additionally, he investigated the relationship between emotions and burnout among healthcare personnel. At Yale University, he collaborated with Ilan Harpaz-Rotem's lab team, employing diverse methodologies to advance the understanding of PTSD symptoms, their mathematical properties, biological basis, and treatment-related changes. His recent work includes exploring the potential of AI tools in psychiatric assessment and research, including the application of large language models in mental health contexts. He completed his habilitation at the University of Zurich and currently holds the position of Privatdozent at the Faculty of Medicine.

Tobias's primary research interest lies in how we define, categorize, and assess symptoms of mental disorders, with a particular focus on PTSD. By combining traditional clinical approaches with innovative computational methods, his aim is to enhance our understanding of both the strengths and limitations of current mental disorder classification systems, thereby establishing a solid foundation for future research in these areas.
